GROUP HIKES & EVENTS

 

 

All hikes are led by MPRPD trained docents and will meet at the locations noted on the hike schedule below. Rain will generally cancel a hike, but please call the hike leader if in doubt.  The telephone numbers for all of the hike leaders are listed on the schedule, along with a short description of the planned hike.

Directions to hike locations in this season’s of Hikes and Activities are listed below.  Special meeting places are noted under the events section.  Some activities meet at different locations than where the activity will actually occur.  PLEASE CHECK THE LISTED EVENT & DESCRIPTION TO MAKE SURE YOU MEET YOUR ACTIVITY LEADER AT THE CORRECT LOCATION.

Frog Pond Preserve - entrance on Canyon Del Rey Rd. between General Jim Moore Blvd. & Highland St.

Garland Parking lot  & Visitor Center - 700 West Carmel Valley Rd (approx 8.6 miles east of highway 1 or 1 mile west of Laureles Grade)

E. Garzas Trailhead - From Highway 1, go east on Carmel Valley Rd. for 10.2 miles, turn right on Boronda Rd., go .5 miles, turn left on E. Garzas Rd., go .2 miles to trailhead on right hand side.

Kahn Ranch Addition   From Highway 1, go east on Carmel Valley Rd. for 11.8 miles, turn right on Esquiline Rd., go .6 miles, turn right on Southbank Rd., go .8 miles.  Go left at Hitchcock Rd., go .6 miles to Kahn Ranch entrance & parking area. 

Marina Dunes Preserve - Take Highway 1 to Reservation Rd. exit (west), turn right at Dunes Drive, cul-de-sac at end of road

Mill Creek Preserve - Drive approximately 10 miles south from Rio Road in Carmel on Highway 1 towards Big Sur. Look for Palo Colorado Canyon Road about ¼ mile past Rocky Point Restaurant.  Turn left on Palo Colorado Canyon Road. The entrance to Mill Creek Preserve is located approximately 6 miles east of Highway 1. Drive very slowly and carefully. The Mill Creek Preserve is currently open to limited public access.  Public access for the Mill Creek Preserve is by permit reservation only on a “first come, first served” basis for up to 8 permits per day.  Parking is available on the shoulder of the road adjacent to the entrance to the trail.

Palo Corona Ranch – take highway 1 south past Rio Rd intersection in Carmel; proceed south of Carmel River Bridge approximately 200 yards.  Make the left-hand turn into the park entrance driveway. Do not block driveway.  Limited parking is available on the shoulder of Hwy 1.  


To ensure that your experience is enjoyable, please observe:

  • For all hikes, wear boots or sturdy walking shoes appropriate for rugged trails.
  • Dress in layers.  The weather can be unpredictable.  No matter what season it is, be prepared for rain, wind, fog, or sun.
  • Carry ample water with you to drink.  Water is not available at many of the hike locations.
  • Restrooms are not always available, please plan accordingly.
  • Dogs are allowed only on our special hikes for owners and leashed dogs.
